For Math we used Lucky Charms to graph and see what Marshmallows were the most common. There were two that were both the most common and it was the Lucky Hat and the Yellow Hourglass. There were the same height on the graph, but Miss Johnson had it where it looked like it wasn't the same length. We learned that is important to draw our information on the graph carefully so that doesn't happen.
Then we went to lunch and then we had to come in and practice at lunch because we broke stamina in Daily 5. We came in and did our fluency and did daily 5 after lunch. Then we went to recess and we did writing and cursive. We chatted about our day then we left and went home.
Classroom Makeover
3/18/2016
You have probably heard the news by now, but our classroom had a makeover this week. Everyone was so excited to see our new classroom when they walked in the door on Monday! The looks on their faces were priceless when they saw all of the new changes. (I wish I would have a gotten a few pics!)
Students now have the choice of where they would like to sit as they think about a spot that can allow them to do their third grade best. They also think about the type of learner that they are and if they work best on their own or sitting in a group. We tried out a lot of different places in the room this week and are quickly learning what is a good fit spot. (We quickly determine together that the stability balls aren't for everyone when someone is rolling out the door on one.) :)
Here's a seating poster that we created together Monday morning.

It has been fun to see how giving the control over to them this week in choosing where to work has made them more responsible learners. They are motivated to get their work done so they can choose where they work and who they sit by. I am so proud of the leaders that they are becoming! I told them I would love to add more wiggle cushions and standing desks, if they continue to work hard at achieving their goals in our room.

Gary Hogg and LIteracy Night
3/12/2016
We had an awesome assembly and writing workshop this past week with children's author, Gary Hogg. I learned so much by listening to him and you could have heard a pin drop in our writing workshop because the students we hanging on every word that he was teaching them.
I love that he also reminded them on where they rated on his smart meter. He let them know if the meter drops, it's only because they are being lazy and aren't doing their best. He talked about active listening and how amazing they can be if they choose to work hard.

I purchased some of his books at literacy night and our class was so excited to see them sitting on our back table when they walked in on Friday morning. They were dying to read them, but knew I needed to cover them first to make them last. I'm letting that anticipation build until Monday and can't wait to see who remembers to go and look for them in our classroom library!
What a great experience and thanks to Aiden and his family for meeting me at Literacy Night!

Apologies and some updates
3/12/2016
Our class knows I always own up to my mistakes to show them mistakes are things we can learn from. They are also great at pointing those out to me when they catch them. :)
With that beings said... I am just now realizing that all of the posts I have written since January have not shown up on our website. I having been writing but didn't have them published to the site. So, I am sorry and here are a few things if you would like to go back and look at some happenings in room 9.

Math Strategy Cards
3/1/2016
I mentioned using strategy flash cards in our March Class Newsletter. Here are a few examples that I created that kids could easily make on their own at home with paper or index cards. Have them start with around 10 facts that they know they need some practice with. Have them master those and then they can make new cards as needed.
Memorizing doesn't work for everyone. Using a strategy helps them memorize the fact in way that makes sense to them. It is important for their strategy to end with "So that means"...and then referring back to the fact on the front of the card.
March Leadership Habit
3/1/2016
This month we are focussing on the habit of THINK WIN WIN as a school and in our classroom. Solving our own problems on the playground is a huge part of Think Win Win. Our class poster shows ways that we can develop this habit.
Raptor of the month
3/1/2016
Congratualations to Ryhann and Michael for receiving Raptor of the Month Awards for January and February!
Ryhann:
Ryhann is a wonderful example of a student who begins with the end in mind. She does her homework and reading every night, she comes to Reading and Math groups ready to learn and she stays focused during work time. I loved seeing Ryhann reach her Math and Reading goals this month. She plans ahead and sets goals for herself, which are habits of a leader. Way to go Ryhann!
Michael:
Michael has been working very hard to make sure he puts first things first. Michael does a fantastic job at staying focused during work time and completing all of his work. He puts great effort in to all of his assignments and our class discussions. Michael also comes in on his own during his recess time if he has work he needs to finish. I love watching Michael set goals for himself and take his time on the most important things. I am proud of the leader that he is becoming. Way to go Michael!

January's Leadership Habit
1/1o/2016
We learned about BEGINNING WITH THE END IN MIND at our Soaring Leaders Assembly this month. As a class we have started to put this habit in to practice by setting some goals and tracking our progress. In our S.O.S. binders we are tracking spelling scores, math pre and post tests and we are also tracking our fluency and accuracy at school for reading. I can't wait to see leaders in our room work hard to reach their goals!
Be Proactive
1/10/2016
Congratulations to Hailey for being chosen for the Raptor of the Month!
Hailey is a fantastic example of a proactive student. She always comes prepared to school with her reading minutes signed. She follows directions the first time and gives polite reminders to others to make our class a positive place. Hailey also has a caring heart and shows concern for her peers. She speaks kindly to those around her and always has a positive attitude. I love seeing her being proactive because that's a habit of a leader. Way to go Hailey!

Hour of Code
12/12/2015
Today you should have seen Math homework come home after school. I sent home a worksheet to reinforce writing time past and to the hour. You can look for Math homework on Wednesday night as well this week. Students know, if they don't have their homework turned in they will work on it at school before they get to do art on Friday. (I have attached the homework page if it has been misplaced or never made it home. Click on students and then go to homework to find the link.)
New spelling lists were also sent home in our binders today. Our pattern this week is contractions. We worked on sorting our words today by writing the two words that each contraction represents.
Our class is also collecting food for the Kuna FFA Canned Food Drive. The class that collects the most food will be rewarded with a party hosted by the Kuna FFA. The last day for the food drive will be the morning of December 16th.
Happy Monday!

Time and Other Things
12/07/2015
We have been working on telling time in Math and will continue again this week and we'll have an assessment on Friday to show what we know. This week we will work on solving elapsed time word problems. You will see homework this week to reinforce this skill with a little extra practice. Time is easy to work on at home with your student. Have them figure out how long it will take to make dinner or drive to an after school activity. Have them practice reading both analog and digital clocks whenever you have a chance. Not to be cheesy, but sometimes this skill just takes a little time for students to be efficient at.
Here are a few pictures from Social Studies last week. We have been working on our group continent posters. We will be presenting these this week and we will take our continents quiz the following week.

Pajama Party
12/01/2015
You probably heard about our exciting news today. We are having a pajama party tomorrow. We filled up our "Eye Like What I See" Jar. We earned eyes whenever we were given a compliment by other teachers or adults at school and also when we got a great report from our specials classes.
Here is the information that was sent home in our S.O.S. Binders today incase you missed it. Our December Newsletters will be coming home tomorrow so you can be looking for those.
Welcome back
11/30/2015
It was nice to be back in school today after a long week off. I hope everyone enjoyed time with family and friends and had a nice Thanksgiving!
Spelling lists were sent home in our S.O.S. binders today. Our test over the r-controlled patterns will be this Friday, the 4th. You should have also seen a paper on our upcoming Wax Museum Project. We went over this in class today and started our discussion on, Who are important people in history worth remembering? This project will be mostly done in class, with the exception of finding or making a costume. I'm looking forward to working on this together as a class and seeing all of the creativity and hard work that will go into our Wax Museum. Please help your student come up with a person that they would like to research this week and make sure they can give me evidence on why this person would be important to remember in our history.
Also, I was very happy to see all of the Thanksgiving Packets that were done over break. I also enjoyed reading with students today and could tell who did their reading over our week off. It is amazing what a difference a week can make when reading doesn't take place. I also appreciated all the report card envelopes that were returned so quickly after a week off. If you have not sent your envelope back, please do so this week so I know you received it.

Thankful

Our school and class are focusing on things that we are thankful for this month. I have challenged our class to write about something they are thankful for everyday during our Work on Writing time. We are trying to come up with a different things each day to write about.
I am thankful for the opportunity I have to come and learn every single day. I love school and I enjoy learning from all of the students in our class. I thankful for all of their different personalities and I'm grateful I get to learn about them and what is important to them this year.
Spelling lists are posted for the week and lists will also be coming home in S.O.S. Binders today. Our spelling pattern is focusing on words that end in -er and -or. Our test will be this coming Friday, the 13th. I hope everyone studies so we don't have any bad luck on our test due to the date. :)
I hope you have a fantastic week and I will be posting more during the week on things that are happening in class!

Fast Forward
11/02/2015
I think someone may have pushed fast forward on the first few months of school! Where has the time gone?! My goal is to be better about updating our class website for those of you that visit often.
Thank you to everyone who came to parent teacher conference last week. I enjoyed talking with each of you and appreciate all of the support. I'm looking forward to watching all our third graders work hard to achieve their goals this school year.
Here is a quick look at the week ahead in room 9...
Reading: We are starting new books in our book clubs. We will be focusing on summarizing to find the central message, moral or theme of the text.
Writing: We will finish working through the writing process and submit our personal narrative pieces for the trimester.
Math: Last week we review strategies for addition and subtraction. This week we will learn a few more and practice some problem solving using what we have learned. We will show what we know at the end of the week with a math test.
Social Studies: We will start our government unit this week.
Spelling: Our spelling focus this week will be on short vowels again. I, O and U will be the vowels of the week with our test on Friday.

First Week
08/29/2015
We had a fantastic first week of school in room 9! I'm so proud of our class and how hard everyone worked to learn all of our routines and rules. We ended our week by introducing multiplication and by trying to write our names in cursive for art (pictures coming soon). It will be fun to look back at our name alien art and see how much our cursive improves after we learn all of the letters.
I was proud this week, as almost everyone in our class remembered to have their agenda signed each night in their S.O.S. binders. Students should be practicing addition and subtraction facts every night for homework along with reading for twenty minutes. They can decide how they want to practice their math facts, whether they make their own problems, do facts on the computer, or practice using flashcards. Let me know if you have any questions about this.
I'm looking forward to another great week in 3rd grade!

Thank you to everyone who attended Open House on Thursday! I enjoyed meeting and talking with all of you. I'm really lucky to have such amazing third graders. Monday will be an exciting day as our class gets to know one another even better! I'm looking forward to working together this year and please remember to contact me if you have any questions or concerns. I would love to hear from you!
